Holy Week
Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday (10am) with the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, followed by the agony of the Passion that he was about to endure.
On Maundy Thursday (7pm), we commemorate the Last Supper, a Passover meal which Jesus shared with his disciples and at which he became our passover, the Lamb of God. We also celebrate the institution of the holy priesthood as Jesus gave his disciples the command to break the bread and bless the cup until he comes again. After communion, the altar will be stripped and washed to represent the tomb that will receive Christ's body on Good Friday.
Good Friday (12 noon) is the day we observe the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. The current Book of Common Prayer is the first to include liturgies for Holy Week. Some are left open to interpretation, but Good Friday is more prescribed. On Good Friday, we enact the ancient liturgy for that day, hearing the Passion according to St. John as well as the Solemn Collects, sung to tones used only on Good Friday. Finally, we solemnly venerate the cross.
The 10am Easter Sunday service will feature a brass quintet and choir, with traditional Easter readings, hymns, and communion. Children are invited to flower the cross (arrive by 9:55am) and an Easter Egg hunt in the churchyard will follow the service, along with a festive coffee hour. Infant/childcare available starting at 9:50 am. Easter bonnets are encouraged!
